Gangaur
Rajasthan’s Gauri walks to her husband’s home — eighteen days of songs and procession.
Why is Gangaur celebrated?
Gangaur worships Gauri (Parvati) — gana (Shiva) + gaur (Gauri) — as the ideal of marital devotion. Beginning the day after Holi, women shape clay images of Isar-ji and Gauri, tend them like family for eighteen days, and finally carry Gauri in bridal procession — re-enacting her departure to Shiva’s home.
The story behind Gangaur
Parvati, visiting her parental home, was sent back to Kailash with love and ceremony — every Gangaur procession is that daughter’s farewell, which is why it moves Rajasthan so deeply: the goddess becomes every married daughter leaving for sasural, blessed on her way.
How Gangaur is celebrated
Women and girls fetch spring water and grass in decorated pots singing Gangaur songs, sprout wheat (javara), paint and dress the clay couple daily, and on the final days take Gauri out in procession with her face veiled till the ghat; the images are finally immersed.
Gangaur across India
Jaipur’s royal procession with elephants and the Tripolia Gate darshan is iconic; Udaipur celebrates on Lake Pichola with decorated boats (Mewar Gangaur); Jodhpur’s Loor songs and Bikaner’s chandmala have their own flavours.
Gangaur in housing societies
Societies with Rajasthani families host the final-day Gangaur procession around the compound — women in poshaks carrying the images, folk songs, ghevar distribution — and a javara-sprouting corner children tend for the eighteen days. Beautifully low-cost; entirely song-powered.
