Why is Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated?

Ganesha is the remover of obstacles and the lord of beginnings — worshipped first in every Hindu ritual. Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates his birthday, and its unique gift is temporary residence: the god comes to stay as a guest, in homes and public pandals, before being sent off in water. The cycle of welcome and farewell teaches that all forms return to the elements.

The story behind Ganesh Chaturthi

Parvati shaped a boy from turmeric paste and set him to guard her door. Shiva, refused entry by the child, struck off his head in anger — and, to console Parvati, revived him with an elephant’s head, naming him Ganapati, lord of his hosts. The public festival is younger: in the 1890s Lokmanya Tilak turned household worship into sarvajanik (community) celebrations that united people across castes under British rule.

How Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated

An idol is installed with pran-pratishtha, worshipped for one and a half, three, five, seven or ten days with modak offerings and morning-evening aarti, then carried in procession — "Ganpati Bappa Morya!" — for immersion. Eco-friendly clay idols and tank immersion are now the norm in many cities.

Ganesh Chaturthi across India

Mumbai and Pune run the grandest sarvajanik mandals with kilometre-long visarjan processions; Andhra and Telangana celebrate Vinayaka Chavithi at Khairatabad scale; Goa keeps it intensely domestic as Chavath.

Ganesh Chaturthi in housing societies

This is the classic society festival: a shared idol in the clubhouse, a 10-day prasad rota, cultural nights, and a procession to the immersion point. It runs on per-flat collection and day-wise prasad sponsors — Zenia’s drive was literally first built for a society’s Ganesh Utsav: tap-to-collect, sponsor calendar for each day, expenses with bills, public ledger.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Ganesha immersed in water at the end?

Visarjan returns the clay form to the elements it came from — the deity is welcomed, honoured as a guest, and released, teaching impermanence. Devotees ask Bappa to come again next year ("pudhchya varshi lavkar ya").

How many days does Ganesh Utsav last?

Traditionally ten (Chaturthi to Anant Chaturdashi), but homes and societies also do 1.5, 3, 5 or 7 days — the send-off just happens on the matching day.

How do societies split Ganesh Utsav costs?

A per-flat festival contribution covers the idol, pandal and aarti needs, while each day’s prasad is usually sponsored by one family or block — a sponsorship calendar keeps it fair and visible.
