Republic Day
The Constitution comes alive — the day India gave itself its own rulebook.
Why is Republic Day celebrated?
On 26 January 1950, the Constitution of India came into force — the world’s longest written constitution, making India a sovereign democratic republic where the people, not a crown, are the source of power. The date was chosen deliberately: Purna Swaraj (complete independence) had been declared on 26 January 1930.
The story behind Republic Day
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s drafting committee laboured 2 years, 11 months and 18 days; the Constituent Assembly debated every clause of justice, liberty, equality and fraternity. The original document — hand-calligraphed by Prem Behari Narain Raizada, illuminated by Nandalal Bose’s Shantiniketan artists — rests in a helium case in Parliament.
How Republic Day is celebrated
The President unfurls the flag; the Kartavya Path parade rolls out tanks, marching contingents, state tableaux, daredevil bikers and the flypast; gallantry awards (Param Vir Chakra, bravery awards for children) are conferred; Beating Retreat closes the celebrations on the 29th with "Abide With Me" traditionally echoing.
Republic Day across India
Delhi hosts the great parade with a foreign chief guest — a tradition since 1950; every state capital holds its own; schools and societies run their fancy-dress "little parades" with children as freedom fighters.
Republic Day in housing societies
Societies hold the winter twin of 15 August: flag unfurling, the Preamble read aloud together — a genuinely stirring society tradition — children’s tableaux, and a chai-pakora winter breakfast. Reading the Preamble aloud as a community, every year, is the best civics lesson a compound can give its kids.
