Independence Day
The tricolour rises at dawn — freedom’s anniversary, and every society’s proudest flagpole.
Why is Independence Day celebrated?
On 15 August 1947, India woke to freedom after two centuries of colonial rule — "a tryst with destiny" redeemed. The day belongs to the flag: hoisted (raised briskly from the pole’s bottom — distinct from Republic Day’s unfurling), saluted, and honoured with the anthem, remembering the price generations paid for it.
The story behind Independence Day
The midnight of 14–15 August 1947: Nehru’s speech to the Constituent Assembly, freedom arriving with the stroke of the clock, tempered by Partition’s wounds. Behind that midnight stood decades — 1857’s rising, Jallianwala Bagh, Dandi’s salt, Quit India, the INA — and countless unnamed satyagrahis whose names the day quietly carries.
How Independence Day is celebrated
The Prime Minister hoists the flag at Red Fort with a 21-gun salute and address; schools, offices and housing societies hold their own hoisting at dawn, the anthem, patriotic songs, sweets (jalebi and boondi by unwritten law), kite flying in the north, and cultural programmes through the day.
Independence Day across India
Delhi’s Red Fort is the centrepiece; Amritsar’s Wagah border ceremony draws crowds; Gujarat and old Delhi fly kites; every state capital mirrors the ceremony; the flag code (adopted 2002) lets every citizen fly the tricolour with dignity.
Independence Day in housing societies
THE society event: dawn flag hoisting at the compound pole by the eldest resident or a veteran, anthem, children’s parade and fancy dress, patriotic singing, sweets for all — and honouring society staff with sweets and thanks. Zenia societies often time their yearly AGM-adjacent honours here. Flag code basics: damage-free flag, briskly hoisted, never touching ground, respectfully folded at dusk if lowered.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between hoisting and unfurling?
On Independence Day the flag is HOISTED — raised from the pole’s bottom, symbolising a new nation rising. On Republic Day it is UNFURLED from the top, already tied — the nation already sovereign.
Can a housing society fly the flag daily?
Since the 2002 Flag Code (and 2022 amendments), citizens may fly the tricolour any day, including at night on tall poles — with dignity: never damaged, never touching the ground.
What makes a good society Independence Day?
A dawn hoisting led by an elder or veteran, the anthem sung together, a children’s programme, sweets — and including guards, cleaners and staff front-and-centre in the celebration.
