Why is Tulsi Vivah celebrated?

Tulsi Vivah ceremonially weds the tulsi plant — Vishnu’s most beloved — to Shaligram (Vishnu’s stone form), on Prabodhini Ekadashi when Vishnu wakes from his four-month cosmic sleep (chaturmas). With the god awake and the divine marriage done, the human wedding season begins the same evening.

The story behind Tulsi Vivah

Vrinda, devoted wife of the asura Jalandhara, protected him through her chastity. To end his tyranny, Vishnu took her husband’s form; her protection broke and Jalandhara fell. Learning the deception, Vrinda cursed Vishnu to become stone (Shaligram) and immolated herself; from her ashes rose tulsi. Vishnu promised to wed her each year — restoring her honour eternally.

How Tulsi Vivah is celebrated

The tulsi in her vrindavan-pot is dressed as a bride — sari, bangles, nose-ring on a stalk — with sugarcane mandap poles; the Shaligram or a Krishna image arrives as groom; a full wedding follows with kanyadaan, mangalsutra on the plant, and a wedding feast; homes light lamps as Dev Diwali approaches.

Tulsi Vivah across India

Maharashtra performs it home by home with tulsi-pot decoration contests; Braj and Varanasi tie it into Dev Uthani celebrations; in the South the day is Utthana Dwadashi with tulsi-amla worship.

Tulsi Vivah in housing societies

Societies stage one grand common Tulsi Vivah at the compound tulsi — children as baraatis, a proper mini-mandap, wedding-style dinner — a rehearsal of every wedding ritual that delights all generations. Also the committee’s cue: hall bookings for the human wedding season start now.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a plant married to a god?

It honours Vrinda’s devotion and Vishnu’s promise — tulsi is Vrinda reborn, wed to Vishnu (as Shaligram) yearly, restoring her honour and sanctifying every home that keeps her.

What is Dev Uthani / Prabodhini Ekadashi?

The day Vishnu wakes from his four-month yoga-nidra (chaturmas) — auspicious activities paused since Ashadha, especially weddings, resume from today.

Why does the wedding season start now?

With Vishnu awake and the first (divine) marriage performed, muhurtas reopen — from Tulsi Vivah to mid-December is peak Indian wedding season.
